Biafra declared its independence from Nigeria in 1967. The heavily Christian region of eastern Nigeria felt persecuted by the Muslims who controlled most of the Nigerian government. After over two years of bloody civil war, in which as many as two million people died, Biafra surrendered and was re-incorporated into Nigeria. During this brief period of independence they issued just three coins for circulation. We are pleased to offer two hard-to-find coins from this short-lived nation. Both are made of aluminum and are dated 1969, their only year of issue. The 2-1/2 Shilling features a leopard and grades XF. The 1 Shilling shows an eagle and grades Almost Uncirculated. The reverse of the coins features a manilla which is a traditional form of currency used in the region. These coins are difficult to find, especially without corrosion as is typically found on this series. We sell out every time we have offered Biafran coins, and I expect these will sell out as well.
